Upcoming (Non-Aviation) TV Programme

Postby 34053 » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:56 am

After last week's outstanding programme about the Spitfire being disassembled and transported to America, there is another excellent one coming up this week for the Steam Locomotive enthusiasts among us:

Tuesday 19th July. Channel 5: 8.00pm - 9.00pm:

Monster Moves: Titanic Trains: ''The Team transport two rare steam locomotives from Turkey to Britain, hauling them 850 miles by train to the Port of Izmir, from where they will be shipped home''.

I understand that, on Sunday 9th June, on the (wait for it) BBC Parliament Channel (Freeview Channel 81; Sky?; Virgin?) there are going to be some 'railway related' programmes being shown. Don't know any more, only that it will be going back to the 'Beeching Era'. Let me know if you find out any more details (times, etc).

BBC website lists it as "Beeching Night" from 1900 to 2300, and says

Nicholas Owen presents an evening of special programming to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Beeching Report on the future of Britain's railways, which recommended closing 3000 miles of track and 2000 stations to help stem massive losses.

No more detail at present.

Tonight, 10.00 on BBC4 ~ For Britain and the Hell of it.

Documentary telling the story of Richard Noble's various attempts on the land speed record, including his successful record-breaking run on Nevada's Black Rock Desert on October 4th 1983.

Repeat of an old documentary to mark the 30th anniversary of Thrust 2's success.

BBC2 tonight 21.00

Especially for me as it's what my Dad did in the War. I've still got a knife that a Russian made for him in Archangel for 5 Woodbine.

A new Series of Michael Portillo's 'Great British Railway Journeys' starts on Monday 6th January, on BBC2 (1830 - 1900 hrs) Mon - Fri, for 4 weeks (20 programmes). I always find these Series of Programmes really interesting, not only from the 'Railway' point of view, but also the 'Local History' and 'Information' relating to the places visited.

(My grateful thanks to Minty for drawing my attention to this).

Really enjoyed the programme I thought Clarkson told the story quite well. I think all of the merchant fleet did one hell of a job during WW2 and their part in the conflict was as vital as the fighting forces for sure.
Respect where respect is due. :ymapplause:

'Railways of The Great War' with Michael Portillo:
- Mon 4th August - Fri 8th August
- BBC 2: 1800 -1830hrs (Mon); 1830 - 1900hrs (Tue - Fri)
Michael travels through Britain and Northern Europe, exploring how the Railways shaped World War I and the ways it was fought'.

Should be an interesting insight.
