National Railway Museum (York)

Last year I reported upon (and included some YouTube clips) of 'Tornado' moving 'Mallard' to the NRM outpost, 'Locomotion', at Shildon. This was to facilitate the £21million redevelopment of the Great Hall at York (branded as NRM+). However, it has been announced that this has now been cancelled. The Museum had submitted a bid for a £7 million grant from the Government's 'Regional Growth Fund' but this has failed.

However, 'Mallard' will not be immediately returning to York but will be going to Germany to star at an Exhibition which runs from July until October. This Exhibition will be held at the DB Museum in Nuremburg, where she will 'pose' with German Streamlined 4-6-4 No 05.001, a classmate of No 05.002 which set the world speed record of 124.5 mph in May 1936, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of this achievement. Of course, two years later, 'Mallard' took the world record on 3rd July 1938 on Stoke Bank, Grantham (on the East Coast Main Line) when she achieved 126 mph. A world record that remains unbeaten to this day.

I had forgotten Mallard was elsewhere. My disappointment was somewhat made easier when I clapped eyes on this beauty though.

No need to apologise Jigsaw; be my guest, especially when you have such pics to share! As you say, a real 'beauty' and a long time in coming together - but well worth the wait. Looking forward to seeing 'Flying Scotsman' on the Main Line.

Further to Jigsaw's post above and the pics of 'Flying Scotsman' in 'Wartime Black' livery, use the link below to the NRM website for more details of the 'Preview Weekend' (28th - 30th May) when Jigsaw was there, plus other information about Scotsman's public 'steaming test' in June:

Here is an update on 4468 'Mallard': She has now returned to the NRM York and is on display in the Great Hall again, together with the LNER Dynamometer Car (that recorded her Record Breaking Speed Run of 126 mph on 3rd July 1938).
