Southern Steam

Just happened to come across this interesting (silent) YouTube clip of 'The early days of the Bulleid Pacifics'. Some great shots of the 'Merchant Navy Class' locos:

There's a wealth of other good stuff listed - especially these two (BR Southern Steam in 1967):

Part 1:

Part 2:

(Watch out for 34102 'Lapford', from about 6 minutes in, sliding into the Platform at Waterloo with the brakes full on!!!)

Edit 1: Part 1 added.

Edit 2 & 3: Note on 34102 'Lapford' added to Part 2

Just found Part 3 (Final clip). So here they are, all three cine-film Parts showing the last days of Southern Steam at Waterloo Station:

Part 2:

Part 3:

(There's a nice shot of 35028 'Clan Line' which still hauls the Present Day 'Orient Express' Excursion trains)

Yes, really interesting. Sad though, when you think that in all of the three Parts (and out of those which I was able to identify - some were going too quick!) only two of the 'Bulleid's' were preserved: 34023 [SR No 21C123] 'Blackmore Vale' (in Part 2) and 35028 'Clan Line' (in Part 3). All the others were withdrawn during March, June and July 1967 and scrapped.

Should you be interested, here are the Locomotives which I was able to identify (in the order that they first appear) and the month in 1967 which they were withdrawn:

Part 1: 34043 'Honiton' (July); 34077 '603 Squadron' (March ); 34088 '213 Squadron' (March); 34104 'Bere Alston' (June); 35007 'Aberdeen Commonwealth' (July); 34060 '25 Squadron' (June).

Part 2: 34004 ''Yeovil' (July); 34089 '602 Squadron' (July); 34090 'Sir Eustace Missenden, Southern Railway' (July); 34023 'Blackmore Vale' (July) Preserved; 34013 'Okehampton' (July); 34102 'Lapford' (July).

Part 3: 35008 'Orient Line' (July); 35028 'Clan Line' (July) Preserved; 34037 'Clovelly' (July); 35023 'Holland-Afrika Line' (July).

I was hoping for a sighting of 34053 'Sir Keith Park' Preserved (which used to run on the Waterloo-Bournemouth Line and also sometimes to Swanage). But, unfortunately, this Locomotive was withdrawn in October 1965.
