Hello Iconic Aircraft Forumites

Postby Anon » Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:54 pm

Just a quick post to say Hello, having joined a litle while back I haven't posted anything yet (except this intro) so I look forward to joining your ranks and participating in some interesting chatter.

I'm an active aviation preservationist and some may know me from the Flypast Forum (am I allowed to mention that!?) by the same moniker. Interests are wide from ancient (well, inter-war) until 1970's aircraft. I've got lots of projects on the go - though whilst I struggle to do them all I believe you can't have too many aircraft (and parts thereof) to play with :D

Cheers,

Anon.

Thanks for the welcome messages chaps!

I'll post a few pics of some of the stuff I do when I figure out how to do it ~x(

Just to whet your appetite: my favourite project is the F-4 Phantom. If ever there was an iconic combat type, this is it. I actually have three cockpits in various states of repair, the best one being my FGR.2, XV490, which is currently on display at Newark Air Museum, Notts, UK.

The next best (but most famous) is one of the ex-USN F-4J's that the RAF operated in the 1980's. It is the original VX-4, Vandy 1. "Black Bunny" 153783. After ten years of searching for all the missing parts I am almost there and plan to start restoration this year.

Number 3. is the ex-RAF Leuchars Phantom simulator. Just the body, not the platform or control gear, it is a genuine F-4 cockpit and is fitted with genuine flight instruments (not sim instruments).

More later.

Welcome indeed Anon :ymapplause:

I read somewhere that XV490 was going to go to Wattisham, is this correct?

Yes, MOD, it (the cockpit) will look like that when it is finished, though that is a picture of the F-4S, which replaced my jet with VX-4. Mine is the original "Vandy 1." and it carried the last four digits (3783) of its serial up high on the rear fuselage when in service.

It currently looks like the lower profile as it still wears its 74 Sqn scheme. The plan is (and I know it may sound a bit naff) is to keep 74 sqn on the stbd side and have the Black Bunny scheme on the port side. The stbd side scheme is still in good nick whereas the port side has many missing panels and damaged paint work so, torn between representing either scheme I decided to go for both.

XV490 is not now going to Wattisham. They have been extremely fortunate and managed to obtain the ex-Phantom Phinale display jet from gate guardian duties elsewhere. It has since arrived and looks great in its old hangar and I wish them well with it.

I'm nearing the end of a major project base relocation so when I'm organised a bit more I'll take some recent pics and post them on here. Can anybody give me a quick lesson in how to do it?

Also, Mods, would it be sensible to move this thread to the main site under a new heading like "Phantom Projects" for instance?

Cheers for now,

Anon.
