New kid (oldish man) on the block ...

Postby Rgw58 » Thu Mar 08, 2012 8:26 pm

Name is Richard and live in Cheltenham with all its Gloster connections. Father is a former Meteor pilot with 500 Sqn. Although interested in aircraft of all sorts have recently, over the last few years due to the demise of the British aviation industry, a passion for British military jets from the Meteor onwards and this forum seems just the right place to chew the fat.

Howdy, Richard..........

Actually, where I come from in the USA
we rarely say "Howdy", but I DO try to
fit the mould sometimes :D

Maybe "Welcome" would be better?

Glad you took the Plunge!

Hi Richard - Being in Cheltenham, are you involved with the Jet Age Museum at all? Vulcan to the Sky and the Jet Age are holding a joint event at Staverton on Easter Monday (http://www.vulcantothesky.org/club/club-events.html). I'll be there (with my son, Ben :) ). Do stop by and say hello, if you get the chance. Latest plan is that I'll be the one by the Vulcan cockpit doing a 10 minute or so talk for people waiting to go up to have a look inside ... if I can keep what I have to say to 10 minutes! ;) :))

I've got membership and have made a donation towards their new permanent location project. I've been in that Vulcan cockpit before and there was someone in there showing us around - an ex-Vulcan crew member, was that you?
My father, now 82, used to fly Meteors with 500 Sqn at RAF West Malling and I've been doing research into his flying career with the RAF.

Managed to find photos of the aircraft he flew including his first solo but not all. I'm having trouble trying to work out the serials from the single letters he entered into the log book on the Meteor 8s. if there's anyone wo could help, it would be appreciated.

Regards.

The same ex-pilot will be in the cockpit again on Easter Monday (being fed cups of tea at regular intervals). I'm sure someone there will be able to help you with your research into the Meteor 8s - or if you want to PM me, I can email your questions to the Jet Age guys ... :)
