It is only the power you need, and the right gearbox and prop. Four Olympus 201s powered each of the Invincible Class carriers. Two would easily power a modern container ship.

However, on the economy front, you are dead right. The several thousand tons of weight and space saving would be more than offset by the extra (and more refined) fuel required.

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Not sure about that, the Mearsk Emma is a hell of a lot heavier than a Invincible class carrier. She also has one 109,000hp engine, plus four smaller ones.

To power the Maersk Emma, you would need four Olympus 201s, the same as the Invincible class, giving 112,000hp. Using modern machinery, two MT30s (Marine Trents) would do the job more economically. You would, of course, still need the smaller auxilliary engines for generators, etc.

The weight (displacement) of the ship has a major effect on accelleration, but a much smaller effect on speed, which is mainly affected by drag. Maersk Emma achieves about 75% of the speed of Invincible from the same power, despite being roughly eight times the displacement.

An amusing set of pics and observations
concerning your Canadian Cousins::::::::

http://now.msn.com/signs-youre-in-canada-photo-gallery

Don't get me wrong, we here in Bangor
LOVE our Canadian visitors, and they
LOVE coming here from New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
to SHOP and EAT and enjoy all of the
various forms of entertainment that
we offer.....

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!

They are notoriously scrimey tippers
and will run a waiter or waitress ragged
and then tip one or two dollars for a
one hundred dollar meal, then profess
ignorance that the gratuity is not part
of the bill automatically as it is "At Home".....
And this from seasoned visitors, too X(

They are notorious LITTERERS who will
dump all of the bags and packaging from
their shopping expeditions or fast food
purchases out the windows of their cars
and onto the pavement with a trash can
or other recepticle just +/- 10 feet away X(

They are notorious for vacating motel
rooms in a state of Absolute Squalor X(

They are notorious complainers concerning
even the tiniest issues when things are
not quite like they are "At Home" X(

We LOVE them and their Canadian Dollars,
even accepting them at par when they are
worth less than our own currency, and I
must admit that not all of them are like
this, but some of them really take the CAKE :))

Please pardon my rant....

I feel much better now :p

They sound like a large number of British people !

I doubt that very much, Ace, but I do
believe that every barrel you can name
contains at least a few Bad Apples :))

I think some of it has to do with their
being away from home and perhaps
feeling free from any real scrutiny or
consequences like they might get "AT
HOME" :p

They would NEVER act that way in Canada,
I am certain!

I'm sure she will do the job she's designed to do,but the new generation of Navy ships don't have the same elegance as of yore. I see they have returned to a pre WW1 bow line.
