Well, I have given it some thought,
Terry, because it's easy for someone
to just chime in with a suggestion.....

I think the aircraft are superb, there's
no question of that, but if you held a
gun to my head and demanded a
comment, I'd say there might, might
be some room for a little more detail
and activity in the background with
perhaps some men waving them off
or working on the aircraft still on the
ground.....

I don't think you'd have to worry about
detracting from the main subjects......

But that's only me and the painting
is simply wonderful as-is!

We are all just so blessed you see fit to
show us your work!

Thanks Jigsaw, as always I really appreciate your comments, you are very encouraging, cheers mate :)

Dan, many thanks for your comments. More activity in the background could work really well. It hasn't been varnished yet so it shouldn't be a problem experimenting a bit with some guys waving and working on the distant 109 and as you say it is unlikely to detract from the main aircraft. Those little things can make a big a difference. I've got a few other paintings on the go at the moment so I'm going to put this one down for a short while so I can return to it with a fresh eye and work on those ideas. As they say, Watch this space :)

Cheers,

Terry

These are a couple of models I made recently, nothing spectacular but good enough I'm hoping to base a painting on. I photographed a load of different dogfight scenes in my front room and thought this one would be interesting. The DR1 is pasted on from a separate shot that was in focus. I didn't know how to get both aircraft in focus on the same shot at the time, I do now :)

Image

The next job was to create an APM model of each aircraft and place them in a similar position. I could just go of the models but APM resolves any issues there might be in regard to perspective and it allows me to move them around a little.

A very rough sketch based on the light etc from the photograhed models

Progress so far. The background was done in acrylic with oil added as the painting progresses. I've roughed the Fokker in and I'm happy the shadows and light from the models seem to be working. More to follow soon.

Thanks guys :)

Not had chance to progress with the Camel yet but had a go at adding some ground crew etc on the Me109 painting as suggested by Dan. I think it adds a little to the painting :)

Amazing!

That's almost exactly the picture I
had in my head!

Not too much, just a little emotion
added to the scene.

:ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

It's also good they're not "Heiling",
just waving to their mates....

Nice, Nice, Nice!

Terry how do you decide on your next subject?

BTW I love that Typhoon 'scramble' shot from La Fresne Camilly. I stayed in an Hotel in Ouistreham a few years ago with a couple of guys who were searching for this airfield's location as they had been there in '44 laying down the psp runway for the Typhoons.

Thanks for your comments on the Me 109's and thanks to Dan for the suggestion. I'm now thinking of adding a jeep :) if it doesn't work it won't be an issue painting it out.

MOD, Thank you for taking a look at "Typhoon Scramble" that's a great story too, hope they found the airfield. The village in the background is purely artistic licence, I hope it isn't too far from the truth.

How I choose my next subject? For the past few years I've been fascinated with WW1 aviation so I've tried to concentrate on that era, hence the amount of Sopwith's :) Sometimes I see a photo like the Typhoon at La Fresne Camilly and I paint that, as long as it's in the public domain or I can get permission. I've never painted a jet but after taking a few shots of the Vulcan at Southport that's about to change. On occasion I get asked to paint particular aircraft, always nice when that happens. In addition to that I'm a member of Manchester Aviation Society and have to paint a variety of aviation related subjects for exhibitions and competitions. I'm always open to suggestions, I can't think of any aircraft I wouldn't paint. It really does vary to be honest but hope that answers your question to some degree, thank you for your interest.

Managed to do a bit of work on the latest Camel painting. It's all a bit rough at the moment but it seems to be getting there. I've roughed the Camel in and added a bit of yellow ochre to the background to liven it up a little.
Still a long way to go yet.

Terry's Quote.. This is one I did last year but wasn't too happy with it. I painted the Albatros a little too far over the left and in an attempt to put it right cocked the whole painting up. Fortunately I photographed it prior to doing that but not with a very good camera. I intend to redo it at some point but thought I would post it to see what others might think.
Image

I have just found this Terry and although I cheerfully admit to not knowing much about art ( apart from my love of the Impressionists ) I do know a bit about how the human eye works. Like all predators it is highly attuned to movement, or in this case 'implied' movement.

The smoke trail from the Albatros immediately captures the viewers attention which may be why you feel ( with your artist's intuition ) that the left hand side is dominant.

Perhaps if the Albatros had been pointing towards the Sopwith Pup and firing its guns, with evidence of some hits, ie torn canvas to the tailplane of the Pup ,say, then the balance could be restored. im (very) ho.

Listen, you say that you are glad you found this forum, imagine how we feel.. ;)

Thank you all for your comments on my work :)
Forgive my ignorance Danf but the only reference to murkin I could find on Google relates to a certain type of wig :ymblushing: You are right about the clothes line, I vaguely remember seeing something like it on a photo.
You make a good point about overdoing the background, it's a fine balance sometimes. It's a good job I have you guys to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Ian, thank you for taking a look at the Sopwith Pup painting. I keep coming back to it to try and figure out what the problem could be without success. It's an odd thing because I always felt it should have worked. I think your observations are spot on, your eye is definitely drawn to the smoke trail which I believe is throwing it off balance. I will be doing the painting again at some point and will have a look at your idea. Thanks for that Ian, much apreciated B-)

TJ::::::::::

Merkin or Mirkin is the burlesque device you mention.....

Murkin refers to our late former President Lyndon
Baines Johnson who, being from Texas, was not
capable of saying the word "American".

The closest he could get was "Murkin".

I am therefore a Proud MURKIN!!!!!!!!!!

cf: "Mah Fella Murkins....." at the opening of his

Looking forward to seeing what else you add to

"He was neither seen nor heard as he fell, his body and his machine were never found. Where has he
gone? By what wings did he manage to glide into immortality? Nobody knows: nothing is known. He ascended
and never came back, that is all. Perhaps our descendents will say: He flew so high that he could not
come down again." L'Illustration, 6 October 1917

Image

The legendary Georges Guynemer was France's most beloved ace.Despite his frail physical appearance he took
part in more than 600 aerial combats and was shot down seven times and survived.
He provoked an overwhelming admiration in all who fought alongside or against him. An excellent marksman and highly skilled pilot,he was hailed as the French Ace of Aces.Guynemer won the hearts of France, receiving letters from women proposing marriage, requests from school children for his autograph and was followed through the streets

In eight months in 1917, the fragile youth shot down 28 planes, including a quadruple victory on 25 May, for a
total of 53 victories. In June, after some 20 minutes in inconclusive combat with an Albatros DV, Guynemer
noticed that his adversary’s gun had jammed. He waved farewell and broke off the fight, leaving his opponent six-victory German ace Ernst Udet, so stunned and disturbed that he had to take an extended leave. Militarily speaking, Guynemer’s gesture proved costly. Udet later shot down 52 more Allied aircraft, became Germany’s second-highest-scoring ace, and survived the war.

Guynemer expected to die in the service of France. When Guynemer’s father warned in the summer of 1917
that there were limits to human powers, he replied, "Yes, limits that it is necessary to exceed. So long as one
has not given everything, one has given nothing.' In early September a tired and depressed Guynemer, visiting
his wounded squadron mate Heurtaux in the hospital, predicted that he would be the next to die.
Two days later, on 11 September, Guynemer disappeared over Poelcapelle, he should not have been flying, but he refused to stop.French schoolchildren were told that he had flown so high that he could not descend. On 19 October the National Assembly and Senate enshrined "Capt. Guynemer, symbol of the aspirations and enthusiasm of the army of the nation," in the Pantheon, "whose cupola alone has sufficient span to shelter such wings."

The painting depicts George Guynemer in the Spad XIII in whch he was last seen. It is the first painting in a planned series of work under the heading of "Aces And Angels".
