Cheers Dan, I have to admit a liking for the Sabre and the Shooting star too, they are on the cards :)
I've made the changes on the MiG painting and re photographed it. Hope you approve.

Back to those old war birds :)

The arrival of the Sopwith Triplane was a great shock to the Germans, it was faster than the formidable Albatros DIII and could out climb and out tun it. In just three months “B Flight” of Naval 10 claimed 82 German aircraft. Better known as “Black flight” due to their black painted fins and cowling these “Tripehounds” were flown by Canadians. The greatest exponent of the Sopwith Triplane was the flight commander of "Black Flight” Raymond Collishaw who scored 34 of his eventual 60 victories with it. Each Triplane had a different name painted on the fuselage,
“Black Maria” N5490 “C” was flown by Collishaw 34 ( +26 with various other squadrons) Died 1976
“Black Sheep” N5376 “N” FSL Gerald E Nash 6 - POW 26/6/17 - Died 1976
“Black Roger” N5483 “R” FSL Ellis V Reid 19 - KIA 28/7/17
“Black Prince” N5487 “A” FSL William M Alexander 16 ( +5 with No.210sqn RAF ) Died 1988
“Black Death” N5466 “S” FSL John E Sharman 7 (+1 with 3 wing) - KIA 22/7/17

Thanks for looking guys,

Cheers,

Terry

Good to see you, Terry!

And keeping bizzy, I see ;)

Nice sense of forward motion, and you can
almost see them bobbing up and down while
in flight :D (and hear the sound of BEES!)

When most people think of a triplane, they
envision the Fokker, so it's especially nice
to see these ones :ymapplause:

(...and I'm relieved there wasn't one named
"Black Sabbath" :)) ...)

Thank You, Mister Jones!

Thanks guys :) I'm never more happy than painting these old machines and Sopwith produced some fantastic aircraft. The Sopwith Triplane caused the Germans so many problems they produced no fewer than 34 Triplane prototypes of their own resulting of course in the production of the Fokker Triplane.
They do look like BEES B-) Hmm.. I'm wondering if I could incorporate this in a title?

Cheers,

Terry

Described as the 'most elegant airplane of the First World War' the Nieuport 28 was rejected by the French Air Service as a front line fighter but as it was readly available it was supplied to the American Expeditionary Air Force. With 26 kills Eddie Rickenbacker was America's most successful fighter ace of the war scoring the first 6 with the Nieuport 28. The painting depicts Rickenbacker and 94th Aero Squadron "Hat In The Ring" in combat with the Pfalz DII. Rickenbacker survived the war and died in 1973.

Wow, that's a great depiction, Terry :ymapplause:

I knew right away what it was after
getting a gander at Uncle Sam's
"Stars and Stripes" Top Hat :D

Eddie Rickenbacker lived a truly
amazing life, too, and was far more
than "just" a flying ace....

Thank you, Terry, yet another
superb piece of work B-)

Thanks Dan :) I'm pleased you like the new painting. Rickenbacker was an amazing man, a hero in every sense of the word. He led such an active life, even a tiny part of it would be enough for most of us. As for his skill as a fighter pilot, one of the best ever. Combining Rickenbacker with one of the prettiest aircraft ever made was a must to paint at some point :)

Terry

I hope I'm not being pushy or anything,
but have you ever considered painting
an (GASP!) AUTOMOBILE??????

Not just static, but either on the road
or in competition????

Have I just perpetrated a sacrilege?

Hope Not!!!!!!

You MUST have a favo(u)rite :D !

Hi Dan, I've never painted an automobile but I wouldn't be opposed to it if some one wanted me to paint one. I did a sub earlier this year which made a nice break from aircraft subjects. A few years back I painted some squirrels in Napoleonic uniform for a couple of books so the idea of painting a car isn't too outrageous ;)

Those are good!

Back to the last a/c painting it makes me feel quite queasy looking at them in that dive so must be realistic.

Had to knock this one out pretty quick. Quite a small painting and acrylic instead of oil. I managed to do it within a week, one of the quickest paintings I've ever done!

Thanks Dan :) It's for a competition next week that I'd forgotten about hence the use of acrylic instead of oil and the small size. Contributing to the exhibition being more important than winning, although I have to say I'm very pleased with the painting, it turned out a lot better than I thought it would :)

Thanks Mayfly and Dan :) I have to agree the originals do tend to look better than the photo's. As for what's next, I'm waiting for an Aussie to get back to me on a commission he's thinking of having done. I'm not holding my breath though, there are a lot of tyre kickers around, he does sound genuine though. Failing any commission work I think it might be back to WW1 :)
Thank you for your continuing support on Iconic it's much appreciated :)

Bristol Fighter F2b No.1 Squadron AFC Palestine "Magpie"

This is a recent commission. The client, a very nice Australian guy wanted to pay tribute to Dick Challenor the subject of the portrait. He knew him many years ago and is the proud owner of his wings.

R T “Dick” Challinor and his pilot, Fred Haigh, were captured in May 1918 when they attempted to land next to another AFC Bristol that had been forced down with a damaged engine after a dogfight with a German fighter. Haigh apparently had asked Challinor whether they should attempt it – Challinor yelled “No, we’re sure to crash”. With the engine roaring, Haigh thought he said “Ok, let’s give it a bash”!! They landed well, the other pilot and observer held on to the wing struts but on takeoff, they hit some rocks and all 4 ended up being captured by Turkish cavalry.
